I was born and raised in Coeur d’Alene, ID. In high school, I won a scholarship for a backpacking botany trip and the next year mentored students outdoors working with the Smithsonian Institution. After high school, I got my B.S. degree in Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University. While in college, I worked in the herbarium in multiple positions, created a seed database for the OSU Seed Lab, worked on a dairy farm in Chile and for INIA (an environmental research station) in Chile, and worked on plant communities in the Great Lakes Wetland Index project for 3 years leading teams working for the EPA and Environment Canada. I came back from the Midwest to become a research assistant for the University of Idaho. I then decided to pursue a M.S. in Natural Resources focusing on how microbiomes interact with larger macrosystems. While in school, I worked simultaneously as a research assistant in the plant symbiosis lab, a research assistant for the Department of Forest, Fire, and Rangeland Sciences; and a teaching assistant for General Botany in the College of Agriculture. As a TA, I realized what I was missing and enrolled in the College of Education to get my teacher’s certificate in Biology and endorsement in all sciences so I could work with students long-term. I have only been teaching science for 2 years, but love it every day. At Priest River Lamanna High School in the West Bonner Country School District of northern Idaho, I founded Idaho’s first, or so I am told, district-wide STEaM Club where I am the current President.
